Canon EOS Rebel XTI with Manual Nikon Lenses
Date of Review: Feb 20, 2007
The Bottom Line: Recommend especially if you have older Nikon manual lenses (with aperature ring) that you want to continue using.
Having waited too long for Nikon to make an entry level body that would meter with my older Nikon lenses, I finally decided to buy the Canon Digital Rebel and use Nikon lens to Canon body adapters for my older Nikon manual lenses. This was an upgrade from a Panasonic/Leica LUMIX DMC-FZ20 which takes great photos, but is noisy above ASA 100. The adapters are readily available on Ebay for about $20 (including shipping). The Canon XTi has already been extensively reviewed and no need for me to say more. I received a Nikon lens adapter last week and tried it with various AI and Non AI lenses that I had carefully selected and purchased over the last 30 years mostly for amateur use. I just couldn't see waisting that huge investment in so much good glass. The adapter worked very well using the aperature priority (Av) and manual (M) mode on the XTi. Lenses even work fine with TTL operation using both built in flash and Canon 580EX that I also just received. Photos are great and I couldn't be happier. Will continue using this outfit until I can afford a full frame sensor version of either the Canon or a future Nikon body. I will mention that I needed 2/3 stop flash compensation when using the Canon 18-55 kit lens. Other lenses (Quantaray 55-200 and various Nikon manual lenses) did not require the compensation.
