Plantronics Discovery 665 - It Has its' Pros & Cons!

Date of Review: Dec 23, 2007

The Bottom Line:  Not the best. The sound quality was way below par. Keep looking, this one isn't it!
Well, after my dog ate my Jabra BT250, I checked CNet, and decided to give this one a try. The reasons I bought it, were the good reviews, and the two charging options.

The ability to charge it in my car was a HUGE bonus, as I use the headset in my car a LOT! I use it all day, but at the end of the day when driving home, my Jabra's battery was dead, and I also do a lot of traveling up North to Vermont, and don't always have a place to charge the headset (except at the Vermont welcome center, where I'd sit for a few hours charging up my laptop and my headset and phone.....while drinking some fantastic Green Mountain coffee....) and the Plantronics also came with a USB charger which meant I could just plug it into my laptop. Love it!

The unit comes with three earbuds, which, unlike my Jabra, are not just gels, but the whole bud. One of them broke when trying to make it 'fit' better, so that was a bummer. I prefer if just the gel came on and off. The earhook was fine, but it was never extremely comfortable. It was an earhook, and as earhooks go, it was ok.

The car charger is great, and worked just fine. The usb charger worked fine too.

Here is my issue. When people called me, who I frequently spoke to, my fiance, my daughter, my mom; they KNEW I had changed SOMETHING, they thought it was a different phone or something. They said my voice didn't sound like me, and the sound quality for them was bad. As for incoming calls, people sounded tinny, like very bad quality sound coming in.

Also, there was a lot of RF interference, and static scratching. These were the major reasons I returned the headset. I wasn't willing to sacrifice the sound quality. My Jabra did suck, but at least the sound was awesome.

I paid $100 for it at BestBuy, which may seem steep to some, but it's an investment for me, in safety and such. I really can't live without it. Especially with a Blackberry or EnV, which I use both, so its really necessary with those Bricks!

Ultimately, I returned it after a few days, and was not happy with the sound. Jabra spoiled me!

Yeah, searching for the ultimate headset it like a never ending search, but this wasn't it. If sound quality is really important, look elsewhere. I talk at length on the headset, and don't like repeating myself or talking loudly, I actually prefer to speak softly, especially in public places. Nothing more obnoxious than someone speaking in a Booming voice into their headsets.

My next headset is the Aliph Jawbone. Look for my review on that one. It may be the winner, we will have to find out!

Pros
Comfortable. USB charger and Car charger are GREAT to have!
Cons
Tinny poor incoming sound. My voice sounded 'far away' according to the callers!
