Rogue Spear surpasses Rainbow Six in graphics, sound and multiplayer options but the story isn't quite as good. Mind you it is high quality. The main reason to buy this game isn't for its story or single player missions. The multiplayer is.
Rogue Spear's story is centered around Rainbow, an elite multi-national special operations group. Rainbow troops are seperated into five specialty groups: Assualt, Demolitions, Recon, Electronics, and the newly added Sniper. There are 18 missions that all vary in objectives from rescuing hostages to placing bugs. Before each mission you can either plan your own missions or use Headquarter's plan for the mission.
The defualt controls are modified in Rogue Spear. Rainbow Six veterans might not like this but you can customize them to your liking. Personally I like the defualt controls for Rogue Spear and before I bought this game I was playing Rainbow Six nonstop with its defualt controls. I am now going to stop saying "defualt controls". The real learning curve is in planning missions because some HQ's plans don't work very well. Also the stealth missions are a pain to beat becuase you have to memorize where the guards are and where they go. Its just not that fun.
The graphics are a big improvement over Rainbow Six. So is the sound and enemy A.I. The biggest improvement is in multiplayer and there are two big reasons other then all the other improvements. Bunkers (the multiplayer only map) is a blast to play. The second reason is Snipers. The thrill of shooting your opponent with a high powered rifle at pinpoint accuracy from a long distance adds so much to multiplayer. Some people only play sniping matchs on the internet.
A big part of what made Rainbow Six stand out from its first person shooting brethren is its realism. The sequel has all the realism of the first. This game should be called "Doom" and almost all the other shooters should be called "Unreal". One hit can kill you even with the heaviest armor. While this can be negative to some it also can be positive. It adds and intensity to the game because you'll always be a few shots away from death.
This next paragraph is where I complain about any of the problems in this game. The first complaint is that this game has some bugs. I returned my first copy for a new one and both had the same problem. Some of the letters in the menus blink and some don't even show up. Also sometimes the briefings are messed up, almost like they slur their words or stutter while they talk.
I'd recommend this game to anyone who likes games. Its mixture of strategy and realism is a new spin on the first person genre that all seem to have the same gameplay. While this game's single player missions are excellent its alot more fun playing on the internet.
